Container Security System — is it going to be a reality?

Worldwide, about 270 million cargo containers are handled in ports annually, a figure that increases by >10% annually.

• Terrorist threat: Global intermodal supply chains are extremely vulnerable to terrorist exploitation. A weapon of mass destruction shipped by a container would cost the economy as much as $1 trillion.

• Shipment and cargo integrity: Goods worth $10-50 billion a year are lost in high-value cargo theft alone in the US. As a result insurance premiums are unnecessary high.

• Operating efficiency and effectiveness: Use of people and equipment is highly inefficient due to lack of visibility within the supply chain. This leads to a loss of confidence among customers.

It is expected that a container security law by the department of homeland security will specify a technical solution like the one offered by KGS in the near future. However, even without the spur of anti-terror security, we believe CSS will win over the marketplace because of favorable economics.

The Kirsen Container Security System products are a family of remote, real-time monitoring and control systems for cargo container tracking and management. CSS determines the geographic coordinates of the container using Global Positioning System (GPS) and other cellular positioning technologies. Using Micro-Electro-Mechanical-Systems (MEMS) and other solid-state sensor technologies, CSS facilitates continuous remote monitoring of the status and integrity of the shipping container via secured Internet access.
