| Container Monitoring System (CMS) |
|
The Container Monitoring System (CMS) is a holistic solution that includes technology and processes that enhance the security and the efficiency and effectiveness of the transport of containers, as visualized in the figure below. The underlying technology consists of a sensor and a communications module, both incorporated in the Container Monitoring Device (CMD). The sensor unit includes a variety of sensors, memory, and the necessary processing power. The sensors can range from positioning systems (e.g. GPS) through intrusion detection and monitoring of cargo condition - such as temperature and humidity - up to threat detection - such as radio-active material. The communication unit may enable readings on a short-range (e.g. RFID or Zigbee) or on a regional (e.g. cellular technology) or global (satellite) scale The readings collected from each Container Monitoring Device (CMD) are communicated to the corresponding Network Operations Center (NOC). There, clearly defined processes are triggered based on the information that arrives. These processes may include the redistribution of containers in case of shortages in the supply chain or the alarming of law enforcement agencies in case of detected illegal or even terrorist activities.
